June 4, 2005 Update by Tina: Dexter is fine, the same as yesterday. He ate a whole can of food overnight last night and seems to hate me more tonight than before. I take this to mean he is feeling better?! He is getting his pain meds every 12 hours. Tomorrow he will go on the infusion pump, I think you know what that is, and get fluids all day before, during, and after surgery. We will clean up his wound again and laser some on his foot. Last night when I set him up in his cage I realized just how nasty his wound is, but, you know, tonight it looked just a touch better. That or now I'm just used to looking at it. I have been expressing Dexter's bladder so that he doesn't just pee where ever. It keeps him, his bedding, and his cage cleaner. He also had a lot of stool "piled" up at in his rectum last night that I had to remove. He has a nice cage set up, very comfy. I put a cardboard flat in with him, like I use for litter boxes (it's disposable), with a small afghan in it. He loves to sleep in it, it's like his little bed, and when it gets yucky I just throw it away. He needs a new one every day because of the wound mess. Anyway he's doing as well as can be expected, not much change. I will e-mail you tomorrow night once I get home and let you know how it goes. I know you will be nervous anytime he's under anesthesia. We discussed doing some blood work to see how every thing else is. We were going to put him on Gentocin but since you can't use Gentocin on cats with kidney problems and we haven't any blood work on him we decided against it for now. Maureen is going to try to talk to one of the specialists over at Affiliated on Monday to get their opinion. She thinks they may recommend Gentocin so we may just go ahead and do blood work. It's really a good idea for several reasons. If he was my cat I would do it no question. At this point there's no reason to compromise care to save money. I think the blood work is necessary. |
