June 5, 2005 Update by Tina:

My Note:  Apparently Dexter is feeling much better these days! His feral qualities are coming back now.  Great sign but I'm sure not great for our wonderful Vet Tech Tina!  Now, I just have to get busy getting an area and housing set up on my property for Dexter and Puddin.

From Tina:  It's official, Dexter and I have a love hate relationship.  I love him, he hates me............and it's quickly becoming a hate hate relationship.  I'm convinced he thinks I am either the grim reaper and it's his final minutes every time I approach or a mad scientist running tubes into him and stabbing him at every opportunity.  I'm quite sure Dexter is feeling much better.  He rarely does anything less than hiss and growl at me and he is getting increasingly more difficult to deal with.  He eats like a wild tiger taking down it's prey.  I think he was trying to kill his can of turkey and giblets dinner tonight.  His ears are always back and eyes dilated.  I think he is ready to get back to being a feral.  This infection stuff got him down and everyone thought he was sweet but the antibiotics and fluids have perked him back up and turns out they were all wrong.

He hates his catheter and chewed out the cap tonight on the ride home.  I fixed it back up and put some 4 inch coflex around it hoping to keep him away but he's ripping little orange pieces of that off in between bites of food.  So your Dexter has bought himself an e-collar which I will put on him as soon as I finish this e-mail.  Let's hope I come out of the lion's den alive.  I'm sure he will hate this collar but he needs his catheter for antibiotics and I can't let him rip it out.

So anyway Dexter was sedated again today and he's wound cleaned and foot lasered.  The food doesn't look much different but Dr. Burton says we'll have to work on it in stages.  The wound also looks about the same.  No dead tissue this time though, it appears to be all healthy vital tissue at this point.  A nice, fresh, open wound.  Tuesday is the next time he will go under to be cleaned up.  We will start him on oral antibiotics after a couple days of the IV antibiotics as he is eating and doing well and the catheter can only stay in a couple more days.  A couple more hours if Dexter has anything to do with it.  The injectible penicillin he's getting every 24 hours will continue for 5 more days.

Dexter and I can't wait until this is all over.
