June 8, 2005 Update by Tina:

Dexter didn't have any procedures today. Dr. Burton felt that he could wait until Friday since there wasn't any tissue death between Friday's procedure and Sunday's procedure. He will get treated again this Friday and will most likely go to once weekly treatments done at U.H. He seems painful when I flush his catheter so I'm not sure if he has a little phlebitis going on or what. When you brought him in Friday he had the IV cath in the right arm but the left arm was shaved completely around as if he had a catheter in it before or they attempted to put one in. Either way it may have already been slightly irritated and then we put another catheter in and caused more irritation. I'm not sure but I feel the cath should be pulled. As I told you before Dexter is becoming increasingly more difficult to deal with. It may be because he feels better or he has learned that no good can come of me but he's hard for me to treat on my own. So I can't remove the tape to see how the arm appears. It will either have to all be removed, tape and cath, or he will need to be sedated. This may be the only way I can remove it anyway. We'll see.

He's eating very well, hates his e-collar but is getting used to it, and otherwise seems to be improving. If I am successful at pulling the IV he can get the e-collar off. Good for him, bad for me. It's my only protection between his teeth and my hand. He really hasn't tried to bite but otherwise puts up a fight. I got his oral antibiotics today and requested a once daily pill if possible. He will start Orbax once daily at any time.

After his treatment Friday anyone can take over his care. He will no longer need my veterinary expertise. Whoever holds him, will just need to get him to me either Thursday night, Friday, or Saturday or to U.H. either Friday or Saturday, whatever works for them. His only other treatment will be the pill once daily which should prove easy enough.
